Occupational therapy careers encouraged
29th June 2009

A University is leading the call for more people to get involved in one of the most highly rewarding, but “unsung” jobs in the health profession.

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is aiming to raise awareness and interest in occupational therapy (OT) careers, claiming that although the profession is extremely fulfilling, it is one few know much about.

It is claimed that, unlike many associated careers including physiotherapy, nursing or medicine, not many people realise what an occupational therapy job entails.

To address is problem and generate interest in an OT career, the University is holding an open day on the 4th July where people can get an insight into the job and find out what OT study courses involve.

“[The open day] is a chance to find out more about the profession, to meet staff, students and practitioners, and even to be interviewed for a place to study the subject at UEA, under a special fast-track application process,” said Dr. Lucy O’Driscoll, Associate Dean of Health Faculty Admissions.

The University are bullish about the occupational therapy jobs market and believe it makes a relatively dependable career in the current economic climate. According to UEA figures, all of last year’s graduates found work in the OT field.

One of the University’s successful occupational therapists is 52 year old Mick Collins, who left school without any qualifications aged 15.

“I absolutely love the work I do, it is very rewarding and satisfying. We can actually use one's occupation to help them get better,” commented Mr Collins.

“Some people can't function properly due to mental distress or because of a car accident and we help them get back to every day life,” he added.
