Interviews can be a daunting experience but this can be avoided provided you prepare and research for them thoroughly. Remember you need to convince the interviewer that you are the best possible option for the job so it is important to spend as much time as you can on preparation to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Below is a twenty-point guide to assist you with the interview process:
Preparation
- Prepare your journey in advance.

- Plan your route if you are travelling by car or tube and make sure that you allow a generous margin of error in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
- Make sure you know exactly where the interview will take place and the name, position and telephone number of the person you are due to meet.
- If the company has more than one site check that you have been given the correct location.
- Remember to bring an original copy of your CV to the interview.
Research
- Find out exactly what the company or team does including its services and responsibilities. Knowledge of any recent press coverage / topical issues is always an added bonus.
- The company website is always an invaluable method of gaining information about the company.
- Before the interview ask your Medicare First consultant to send you a brochure or information about who the client is and what they do.
- Ask your Medicare consultant what format the interview will take. Will the interview involve any written assessments?
- Make sure that you have a copy of the job specification (if applicable) and ensure that you understand the position you are applying for.
The Interview Itself
- Dress smartly!
- Arrive early for your interview - preferably 15-20 minutes beforehand.
- Call your Medicare First consultant and advise them if you are going to be late. Usually they are more sympathetic when they are informed than when they are not.
- Unfortunately, first impressions count so ensure that you present yourself in a clear, coherent and confident manner.
- Shake hands firmly with the interviewer and anybody else you are introduced to.
- Listen to the interviewer.
- Answer questions asked. Be careful to avoid waffling and always answer honestly.
- Make sure you ask relevant questions.
- Convey to the interviewer that you are interested in the position.
