Contractors' Insurance
Employer's Liability Insurance
Under UK law, all employers are required to provide certain basic insurance cover for their employees. As all limited companies are required to "employ" as a minimum a single director, then this statutory obligation also covers the "one man (or woman) Limited Company". This insurance is arranged to protect employers against claims for injury or illness brought by employees. Contractors working through an umbrella company need to check with the administrators that the company's insurance covers them; you may need to get your own insurance. Unfortunately, an agency's insurance cover does not always cover the contractor; it may only cover the agency's liability.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional Indemnity insurance is a vital element in protecting any business and especially in an industry where disputes and litigation are increasingly common. Basically, this type of insurance provides you with financial protection for your business and is designed to meet the costs of defending claims against you, including damages that may become payable. Claims can arise where a client or other person suffers financial loss as a result of professional negligence, alleged errors or omissions on your part.
Public Liability Insurance
The purpose in taking out a public liability policy is to protect you against your legal liability for third party bodily injury and/or financial loss or damage to property where such injury or damage occurs during the period of the insurance. The policies outlined above are designed to protect the contractor from incurring substantial losses. Whatever your circumstances, we recommend that you seek professional advice on this subject.
